How to become a Coach/Mentor Partner with Fit Education

Fit Education provides on-line learning and assessment opportunities for students to obtain their SIS20115 Certificate II in Sport and Recreation, SIS30321 Certificate III in Fitness, SIS40221 Certificate IV in Fitness and SIS50321 Diploma of Sport. 

Fit Education Students have the opportunity to identify a sponsor fitness facility or Coach/Mentor to assist in the supervision and observation of practical assessment activities and provide opportunities to complete practical experience. 

Gyms or Personal Trainers that help enrol new students and become their Coach/Mentor receive from $400 to $800 per student.

Roles of the Coach/Mentor

The Coach/Mentor role is to provide the student with supervision while performing a variety of fitness industry related tasks relevant to their course, and to provide opportunities to obtain work experience. 

The work experience is provided on a volunteer basis and are at no cost to you or your organisation. Work experience hours enable a student to gain valuable experience through assisting you to conduct various tasks such as administration and reception, marketing and promotional activities, event planning, equipment maintenance, attendance in fitness activities and or observing other fitness trainers deliver fitness activities. The student is provided a work experience log book where they record work experience undertaken 

All hours are to be verified by the person conducting the activity or supervising them during the task.  

There are 3 levels of Coach/Mentor: 

  • Level 1: Working in the Industry (Receptionist, Gym Floor Supervisor) 
  • Level 2: Qualified and working in the Industry (Qualified Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor) 
  • Level 3: Qualified and working in the Industry with additional Cert IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116) OR diploma or higher-level qualification in adult education. 

Supervision of assessment tasks

Mentors need to have the skills and knowledge appropriate to the task being observed. For example, a receptionist can observe and supervise the student providing client and customer service at the front counter as the receptionist possesses the skills, knowledge and ability to perform to the organisational standards and in a competent manner. 

Resources required

Should you be in a position to assist our students the following is an outline of the type of resources that may be required, however access to all listed resources is not mandatory. 

  • Venue, facility or location with sufficient equipment to provide a fitness environment, reflecting the fitness industry requirements to provide a variety of exercises such as:  
    • Weights (machine/ free-weights/innovative equipment for circuit activities)
    • Cardiovascular equipment 
    • Exercise to music /group fitness activities 
    • Outdoor environments 
    • Telephones, computers, information, software programs for provision of client services 
    • Access to a variety of client groups with a range of fitness needs and expectations including older clients with managed conditions and apparently healthy children and adolescents. 
    • Access to a variety of work-related products and services including policies, procedures and documentation

Feedback on the performance of the student is greatly appreciated, as is our focus to continually strive to improve the process for all stakeholders. 

You or your organisation are able to cease participating in this program at any stage. We request that any situations where you are not satisfied with the performance of the student, Fit Education is notified, so the matter may be addressed with the student. 

 

Role of the student

Our students are provided a code of conduct in their Student Handbook which they are required to follow while undertaking training and work experience tasks including: 

  • Respect the confidentiality and privacy of clients and fitness businesses/providers. Students are bound by the confidentiality and privacy requirements of the organisation to ensure safety of client and commercial-in-confidence information and procedures 
  • Students are to abide by and adhere to the policies and procedures of the organisation including any dress standard requirements.  
  • Students are to be professional at all times and maintain the standards established by the fitness organisation  

During observation of Personal Training activities students are to: 

  • Be attentive and interested in the entire session 
  • Assist the trainer only when requested by the trainer 
  • Be aware of the feelings of the client being observed. The presence of a student may be intimidating and uncomfortable for them. Students are to be discreet and observe from a reasonable distance to give the trainer and client room to train 

Students have joined Fitness Australia “student membership”. The tasks undertaken by the students are at a mentor’s discretion however the students are not covered for insurance purposes other than as a volunteer/visitor to the organisation under public liability insurance. 

Role of Fit Education

Fit Education is responsible for the learning and assessment of the student as well as offering support and guidance to mentors and sponsors as required. 

Tasks to be observed 

An outline of the type of tasks to be undertaken by the student under supervision of a qualified person is provided within the assessment Instructions for each assignment. 

An example of the types of tasks to be observed are: 

  • Application of general WHS requirements
  • Conduct and implementation of routine maintenance tasks including dealing with maintenance issues beyond their area of responsibility (e.g. using appropriate reporting channels, signage/removal of equipment) 
  • Development and implementation of risk management plans 
  • Day-to-day activities within the fitness environment including interacting with and assisting clients and work colleagues in the provision of customer service, such as responding to enquiries, filing, management of appointments, sales (memberships/merchandise) 

Conduct client fitness orientation and health screening to a range of clients:

  • Administer, review and process a health screening questionnaire 
  • Identify client characteristics and develop fitness programs to client needs 
  • Provision of advice regarding fitness activities relevant to client needs 
  • Plan and conduct fitness appraisals and analyse and manage information. 
  • Provide current and accurate information to clients regarding healthy eating guidelines and lifestyle behaviours 
  • Provision of advice regarding body composition management 
  • Develop, instruct and monitor fitness programs for clients 
  • Plan and deliver group fitness and circuit style sessions to a range of clients 
  • Provision of fitness services and activities for a range of clients, including older adults with managed conditions 
  • Conduct of postural appraisals utilising a range of assessment tools and methods within their legal and ethical limitations. 
  • Conduct of strength and conditioning training sessions.
